Subject: Last Email

Dear Supporter:

For those of you who have received many emails from me, this is the last one unless, of course I win or run again in two years.

If you have already decided to vote for me, please make sure you vote and get as many of your friends to vote as well.

If you have not decided yet or need some material to convince your friends to vote, below is some material that I hope will be persuasive.

Thanks!

Roland

Dear Voter:

I would like people to make a comparison between my opponent and me. Here is a list of things were I differ substantially from my opponent:
  • We need Knowledge, Judgment and Action in Washington
  • We need effective regulations to prevent another terrifying economic crisis
  • We need to control spending and taxes
  • We need to develop a sane, reasonable energy policy written by engineers
  • Our children deserve a first rate education.
  • We need to be safe in our homes
We need Knowledge, Judgment and Action in Washington
I am not a career politician. I am a businessman and an engineer. I will vote based on what will be best for the people of the 8th Congressional District and the United States. My opponent will cast his finger to the wind, and vote in whatever manner will advance his personal career. You only have to read about his votes on the bail out, first against, and then for, to see that this is true. He voted for the pork filled farm bill from which New Jersey receives no benefits so that the would be in a better position to get his pet projects approved. Now, more than ever, with a war going on and the current economic crisis, we need efficiency, logic, and independence in Washington. A career politician simply cannot bring about the change we need. I am not a career politician, but an engineer and a small business owner who has practice finding and implementing effective common sense solutions. I have the integrity and the judgment to help make Washington work for you, the taxpayers, not special interests and party insiders.

We need effective regulations to prevent another terrifying economic crisis
We need a congressman who understands financial instruments and econometric models. During my time as a Financial Associate at Union Camp Corporation, my job was to understand the economy and make economic forecasts. My opponent has no such experience.

We need to control spending and taxes
One of my major reasons for wanting to go to Washington is to control spending. While the Republicans advocate controlled spending and a balanced budget, they have really lost their way on this issue. I supported President Clinton's reduction of the federal deficit. As a small business owner who has developed the habit of controlling spending for 37 years, I would like to join the 50 to 100 Republicans and Democrats in Congress who want to get value for the taxpayer's money. My opponent has voted to increase taxes and spending at every opportunity.

We need to develop a sane, reasonable energy policy written by engineers
We need to develop a smart energy policy designed by engineers, not lawyers, special interests, and fear mongers. We must drill offshore and in Alaska or wherever we can find oil. We must develop all alternatives including but not limited to nuclear, solar, wind, geo-thermal, coal, tidal, and hydroelectric. The type of development should be based on solid engineering not pseudo-science. Factors that need to be considered are effect on the environment, cost, transportation, and amount of the resource available. My opponent has been against drilling for oil for 10 years until very recently. He now advocates that we drill 50 miles off the coast of New Jersey. He still does not concede that we should drill where the oil is.

Our children deserve a first rate education
We need to develop programs to insure that our children get the first-rate education they deserve. Parents should choose a school based on the child's needs. A school should not be chosen based on the parent's income or address. My opponent is against parental choice and prefers the teachers union over our children's education.

We need to be safe in our homes
As a Veteran, I would be very reluctant to send our troops into war. Once they have been sent into war, however, I would support them 110%. Not only would I support the troops while overseas, I would support them when they come home. When I came home from the Vietnam War, I felt that I was treated very badly and would not want any returning Veteran to be treated that poorly again. My opponent, not only voted to send the troops to Iraq, he voted against nearly every bill to support them once they were there.

Biography

Roland Straten grew up in Wayne and now lives in Montclair. After finishing high school, he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and served in the Navy aboard the USS PYRO off the coast of Vietnam. In 1971, Roland took over Associated Fire Protection, a small business his father started in Paterson. He has served as an officer of the New Jersey Chapter of Fire Protection Engineers, as President of the New Jersey Association of Fire Equipment Distributors, and as a Commissioner on the New Jersey Fire Commission. He is a member of the Paterson Rotary Club. In Montclair, he was Scoutmaster of Troop 13 and served as Vice Chair of the Montclair Redevelopment Agency. Why vote for Roland Straten?

As I talk to people, the topics, even before the current bailout, that always concern people are out of control government spending and high taxes. Many feel that they have been lied to by candidates who initially promise lower taxes to get elected and then are transformed into big spenders once they are elected.

I intend to bring 37 years of experience, knowledge, and judgment to Washington on your behalf. I will not go to Washington with the intention of making a big name for myself. I will go to Washington to improve how Congress does business.

You may ask: Why will you succeed when so many others have been corrupted? My answer is that it took 37 years in business, 6 years of education, and 2 years in the military to become the person I am. A few slick characters will not change me. And what do you as a voter have to lose by electing me? We have had 12 years of higher and higher taxes and incompetent decisions in Washington. Please give me two years to show you I can do better for you.

Please look at my website WWW.RolandStraten.com to read about what I believe in. In it, I honestly explain exactly my views on important issues. Don't miss the core values section.

If you like what you see, please vote for me. But I need more than your vote. I need your help.

You can help by telling others about me and that you liked what you saw. You can help by volunteering or sending a contribution regardless of how small. Your contribution will help get this message to more people in the 8th Congressional District.

Please email me or call me if you have any questions. My email is RStraten@rolandstraten.com and my phone number is 973.333.5415.

This mailing has been totally paid for by the Straten for Congress campaign that has been funded by many small contributors.

Roland Straten

Please vote for Roland Straten for Congress in the 8th Congressional District of New Jersey.
