Health Care

  • Reduce costs so that health care is available to all.

  • Allow for an effective free market solution by avoiding too much government intervention.

  • Encourage choice in healthcare coverage so that the insured can purchase coverage best suited for their needs.

We have an obligation to provide affordable health care to all of our citizens. Most will agree that we have one of the best, if not the best, health care systems in the world. Its only problem is that it is too expensive. It has become overly cumbersome and is burdened with nonproductive regulations.

Many politicians are seeking to give the government a larger role in the health care system, but the truth is that many of the problems with our health care system are caused by the unnecessary government regulations already in place. These are the elements I feel must be incorporated into the healthcare solution:

  • All health insurance premiums and medical expenses should be tax-deductible, not just those of employer sponsored plans.

    • We need non-discriminatory practices regarding the handling of health insurance premiums.

    • Right now only employers receive deductions when health insurance premiums are paid, a system that is outdated and failing.

  • Frivolous and malicious lawsuits must be eliminated. Tort reform is essential to keeping health care affordable for all citizens.

    • Civil justice reform is a must. According to a Pacific Research Institute poll NJ ranks 49th out of 50 states in tort law cost.

    • The cost of these lawsuits gets added to the overall healthcare bill- and we all pay.

  • The middle class and uninsured who either cannot or can barely cover the expense of their own health care should not subsidize Medicaid and Medicare.

    • As if the middle class doesn't carry a big enough burden, having them subsidize Medicaid and Medicare is another example of the outdated healthcare system.

  • Health insurance plans should be transportable. You should not lose your coverage if you get sick or change jobs.

    • Changes in your health and employment happen over the years. By providing a plan that can commute with you from job to job and even unemployment, will ensure that worrying about health care costs will not interrupt everyday life.

    • By enacting this policy it will create insurer competition and further focus the healthcare system on the individual.

  • Regulations that increase the cost of health insurance should be reduced.

    • The ability to acquire affordable good quality health insurance is difficult enough. That is why special interest and bureaucrats need to have their influence reduced so that families themselves can determine what healthcare plan is suitable for them. Not only monetarily but also through options and choices that are both sensible and reliable.

  • Encourage health savings accounts and private, flexible spending plans.

    • Individuals know more about their private financial matters than any politician would and should therefore be provided with ways to do even more good with the money they earn.

    • These options come in the form of tax-free healthcare savings accounts that the individual themselves determines how much they invest in it. These accounts can result in a greater support of deductibles of a health insurance policy and can even serve as a way to gain lower premiums.

  • Encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles.

    • Perhaps the most important change of all; this position takes into account many levels of society. Starting with a retooled education initiative to provide young people with ideas and skills on how to treat and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

    • By accomplishing this, standards of health will go up and health insurance policies will go down…something we all can live with.
